Happy 2018 - Here's a great film we saw!

Dr Seuss : The Lorax -

from the creators of Despicable Me

In the walled city of Thneed-Ville, where everything is artificial and even the air is a commodity, a boy named Ted hopes to win the heart of his dream girl, Audrey. When he learns of her wish to see a real tree, Ted seeks out the Once-ler, a ruined old businessman outside of town in a stark wasteland. Upon hearing of how the hermit gave into his greed for profits and devastated the land over the protests of the Lorax, Ted is inspired to undo the disaster. However, the greedy Mayor of Thneed-Ville, Aloysius O'Hare, has made his fortune exploiting the environmental collapse and is determined to stop the boy from undermining his business.

WATCH THE FILM!! Would you like us to arrange a screening here at school?

Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not. - Dr. Seuss

Our thoughts :

When you see a film like this you think, well that's obviously ridiculous compared to real life. We would never cut down the last tree, or murder people who are trying to protect the trees. But then we saw in the International news this week that in South America (the continent with the highest percentage of forest cover) someone from a local community who was opposing clearing of a natural reserve was tortured and killed. Should things like that still happen in our world?

Environmental News this week..

Oil Tanker Burning Off China’s Coast

An oil tanker called the Sanchi, caught fire after colliding with a Chinese ship in the East of China’s Sea the 9 January, 2018. The Sanchi was carrying 136,000 tones of ultra light oil, known as condensate. This was equivalent to 1 million barrels.
The size of the oil spill from the ship and the environmental harm were not known, but the disaster has the potential to be the worst since 1991 when 260,000 tonnes of oil leaked off the Angolan coast.
