ENRICHMENT PROJECT SCIENCE

Quin plaer observar i ajudar als alumnes a que gaudeixin fent ciència!


Els treballs  aquest trimestre han estat els següents:

Els alumnes han triat el projecte i l’han desenvolupat per complet. Han après com posar a la pràctica la seva recerca  seguint el mètode científic i finalment han exposat els seu treball.

Bojos per la…../Crazy about……?

Who is bojos/crazy and what are they crazy/bojos about?

The answer is that Adriana C. (does she seem familiar) and Isabel L. (and her too) have both been accepted onto a bojos course. So what is it about?

Isabel L.  has been accepted onto the Bojos per la Natura program. It takes place two Saturdays a month from February to November 2016. There is both fieldwork and visits to laboratories and research centres throughout Catalunya. Some activities include marine biology, paleontology and going to the Delta del Ebro. The activities are directed by researchers working in the ICTA (Institut de Ciencia i Tecnologia Ambientals) which is in the UAB. Adriana C. will be doing the Crazy About Biomedicine program
It's a year-long program directed to students in the first year of baccalaureate and it takes place in the labs at the Institute for Research in Biomedicine of Barcelona (IRB). The course combines practical and theoretical lessons to cover 12 hot topics in the area of biomedicine, ranging from rational drug design to the study of novel cancer treatments, and allows students to get a taste of what it's like to investigate in an international research institute such as the IRB. 


Well done to the both of them again! These ladies will go far in the world of Science!

Experiments in Science



Experiments (practicals) make up a vital component of all of the sciences wherever or however you study them. It is through experimentation that scientists are able to determine the cause or effects of the area which they are studying.

Here at Oak House School, the Science department takes experimentation very seriously. We use a three pronged approach in training our students in the art of experimentation.
The first is getting our students used to being in the lab, getting to know the equipment and how to use it accurately and precisely.
Secondly is getting the students to become aware of the variables that can affect the result of an experiment and how they can be controlled, during experimental design, in order to get a repeatable and reproducible result.
Lastly there is the ability to analyze results to extract meaningful conclusions and also determine the trust with which you can give that result through error analysis.

These three aspects are covered in different ways in different year groups. Whether it's in the weekly practicals in 1st and 2nd ESO, the training for the IGCSE practical exam in 3rd ESO, the Science enrichment afternoons for both cycles of ESO where students can pursue their own projects or the extensive practical training they receive in 4th ESO. All of this training prepares the students to then handle the internal assessment for IB and the research components for both the treball de recerca (Bachillerato) and the extended essay (IB).

None of this would be possible without the dedicated efforts of our lab technicians who are always available for the requests of both teaching staff and students in their practical pursuits.

The Antarctic glacier melt is unstoppable

Scientists have been researching into Earth’s Global Warming for a long time. They say that the ice collapse could raise all the Earth's sea levels by more than 4 meters. This means that cities like Barcelona could disappear if this continues; however, they now say it’s unstoppable! Scientists says they are on an irreversible path to melting and that it’s impossible to stop it.

On May 16, Ian Joughin of the University of Washington in Seattle, who used simulations to show  the Thwaites and Haynes Glaciers in the same region, said that they may melt  in the next 200 to 900 years. Once this started, the glaciers could raise sea levels by 0.6 meters and start the melt of the rest of the continent’s ice sheet, which could add another 3 to 4 meters to the world's oceans.

Family Day 2014 in the Science labs


To Oak House School family day 2014!!!


Have you been to the Science labs yet?
Look at the Torre and look right and there we are! Come and see us!

In Drosophila, on the right, we have work that has been presented by our 1st and 2nd ESO students, both in their Science classes and their enrichment afternoons. Also lots of cool experiments for you to try, even the Van der Graaf (shocking!)

In Gaudí, in the middle, we have robots, models, bridges and bizarre applications of physics. This is work presented by 2nd ESO and 4th ESO technology and 4th ESO Physics students.

On the right we have Marie Curie. Outside, where it's hopefully shady, you will find the poster presentations for the first ever Oak House School Science Fair. Have a look, decide the winner and learn some cool Science. Inside you will discover lots of things to interact with and to learn from. Also there will be demonstration experiments every half an hour as follows:

Olimpiada de Biologia de Catalunya



Dissabte 8 de febrer, com ja us anunciàvem en la Newsletter de la setmana passada, vàrem assistir a l’ Olimpíada de Biologia de Catalunya. Entre pares, professors acompanyants i alumnes  aspirants es respirava l’emoció de participar. Per a mi va ser una experiència molt gratificant estar entre els futurs estudiants de carreres biosanitàries. Especial emoció em va generar veure que alguns es coneixien entre ells d’altres activitats compartides, com “Bojos per la ciència”.
Em va fer pensar en la importància de participar en activitats on els alumnes amb els mateixos interessos troben un espai d’intercanvi  d’idees.

Espero que puguem participar en properes edicions!

Oak House School Science Fair…time is running out!

Last November the Science department proudly launched its first ever Science Fair and since then interested and enthusiastic students have been getting together to decide on their projects and start on the path of research.

Twenty two groups across the four age categories have embarked on their projects hoping to be the first winners of this competition. Over half of these groups have come from primary showing the great enthusiasm they have for Science.

Projects range from microbial analysis of the school to looking at the energy consumption within the school, with lots of other fascinating ideas in between.

If you are interested in participating then you need to decide on a project and get started as soon as you can. The closing date for entries will be Monday 31st of March where students will need to submit a short video showing what research they did, the results they found and the conclusions they can make.

There will be a first round of judging and successful candidates will be asked to give a poster presentation for Family day (May 19th in the labs) where the final winners in each category will be decided.

Though the prizes haven’t as yet been decided on they promise to be something special and worth competing for.

Through this Science fair, we, (as a Science department), hope to fire up the imaginations of our students and teach them the skills needed for proper scientific research. This will aid them with their future treball de recercas/extended essays in Bachillerato/IB and further on in University.

Science demonstration videos by 3rd ESO students

As part of our Science enrichment project, three 3rd ESO students, (14 to 15 year olds for those not familiar with the ESO system), chose to film some Science videos which could then be used in class (which I did yesterday!!).

Please enjoy their version of electrolysis, (see if you discover the hidden meaning of the frogs) and the making of a smoking device (which you will see shows that not all Science experiments work as you would like!) (By the way I haven't given the actual name for the second video for fear of getting the undue attention of the NSA but then this might boost our readership).

Under no circumstances should you undertake any of these experiments without proper supervision. This students carried out these experiments under supervision and following strict safety protocols.

2nd Cycle ESO Science Enrichment Project

We are now in the middle of the second term of this Science enrichment project and of the 24 enthusiastic students who took part in term one, 13 decided to come back for more!!
“We love the freedom that we have to do what we want in the lab”
was one comment that was made at the end of the first term;
“I enjoy being able to see what we learn in class in a practical setting”
was another comment.


Of course, having 24 students let loose in a lab might frighten the hardiest among us, but every week I am surprised and delighted by the level of interest, enthusiasm and dedication shown by these students.
Projects being developed this term include:
·         The development of a solar powered water purifier.
·         Materials from organic sources including plastics and biogas (which is filling a balloon next to me as I write).
·         The analysis of phage DNA using restriction enzymes.
·         A microbiological analysis of the school environment, (the results of which might be frightening).
….among others.
The students we have show a level of curiosity and dedication which will stand them in good stead for whatever career path they wish to pursue!!

LOS HOMBRES HEMOS INVADIDO EL MUNDO DE LAS BACTERIAS


El doctor Francisco Guarner director clínico del servicio del Aparto Digestivo de la Vall d’Hebron impartía hoy dia 26 de Noviembre una charla acerca de los genes y la función de la micro biota intestinal.


La conferencia iniciaba con una demostración de la importancia de microorganismos como por ejemplo el Plactón, que puede ser visto desde el espacio (Islas Fiji) que son los responsables de fabricar un 50% del oxígeno del planeta y de consumir un 20% del dióxido de carbono del exterior.

También explicaba como las cianobacterias son las responsables de todo proceso respiratorio y remarcaba que existían mucho antes de la aparición del ser humano. De ahí el titulo de este resumen ‘’los hombres hemos invadido el mundo de las bacterias’’ porque realmente mucha gente concibe las bacterias como ‘’invasoras’’ cuando la realidad es que nosotros las hemos invadido a ellas.

Las bacterias son organismos bastante sencillos compuestos por entre 500 y 4000 genes. Las bacterias por si solas no son funcionales, sino que se agrupan en comunidades para obtener energía metabólica. A pesar de que un humano como individuo sea mas ‘’poderoso’’, las bacterias tienen la capacidad de sintetizar compuestos esenciales de los cuales nosotros carecemos de las herramientas necesarias para hacerlo. Por ello un gran ecosistema de las bacterias es la flora intestinal.  Se denomina flora o biota intestinal al conjunto de bacterias que viven en el intestino, en una relación de simbiosis tanto de tipo comensal como de mutualismo. La función de las bacterias en términos generales es extraer energía de los compuestos indigeribles por los humanos del intestino.

Para demostrar la importancia de la flora intestinal ha hecho referencia a Wostmann, quien llevo a cabo un experimento comparativo entre animales con flora intestinal normal y animales ‘’germ free’’
Se demostró que los animales sin flora intestinal tenían menos peso en todos sus órganos pero requerían mas nutrición que los normales, por tanto necesitaban mas para producir menos. Además el sistema inmune presentaba fallos.
Se llegó a la conclusión de que la flora intestinal es esencial para la nutrición.

También se realizó un experimento con ratones, que demostraba que sin flora intestinal los ratones presentaban hiperactividad, y aun mas interesante, que en ausencia de flora intestinal los ratones se socializaban menos.

Existen bacterias no beneficiosas, que adoptan actitudes invasivas frente al organismo, son aquellas que provocan enfermedades como la tuberculosis, la sífilis, estreptococos o la fiebre de Malta. Estas bacterias poseen pocos genes por lo que ha sido fácil desarrollar antibióticos para combatirlas con las nuevas tecnologías.
El problema que ha surgido a raíz de esto es que no hemos sido selectivos al eliminar bacterias y además de las dañinas hemos eliminado muchas bacterias beneficiosas muy difíciles de recuperar.

Las enfermedades que han disminuido son:

-         Hepatitis A
-         Reuma
-         Tuberculosis
-         Fiebre de malta
-         Entre otras

Las que han aumentado o aparecido son:

-         asma
-         esclerosis multiple
-         diabetes tipo 1
-         enfermedad de Chrom (está presentando problemas en la actualidad)

En conclusión hemos aniquilado muchas bacterias que mantenían el equilibrio inmune.

¿Cómo detectar que tipo de bacterias son?

1)    Con el gen 16S rDNA PCR  que nos ofrece una lista con el tipo de comunidad al que pertenece cada bacteria
2)    Secuenciar ADN es otra forma que a pesar de ser mas compleja nos permite saber la funcionalidad de cada comunidad

De todas formas las comunidades bacterianas fluctúan según el entorno, la alimentación, el lugar…

Existe un 26% de genes que no podemos secuenciar de unos 600.000 totales. 300.000 de ellos son comunes a todas las personas de todos los lugares del mundo, el resto varían.

También existen genes que las bacterias solo expresan en presencia de otras bacterias lo que nos aporta información sobre su funcionalidad. Dependiendo de la profundidad de secuenciado obtendremos mas o menos precisión.  Por ello existen muchos datos sobre los genes que tenemos que varían en grandes cantidades.

Se ha intentado relacionar la obesidad con la flora intestinal y aunque no está estrechamente relacionado si que se ha demostrado que la escasez de flora intestinal produce una hinchazón en el intestino, provoca la acumulación de grasa y además el aumento de leptina, es decir, que por mucho que este lleno, el individuo no llega a la saciedad. Por ello recomiendan dietas bajas en calorías.


Como conclusión nos ha explicado la aportación que estos descubrimientos y su la aplicación que se está intentando dar con transplantes de microbiota y como poco a poco se pretende identificar con exactitud que bacterias necesita cada individuo.
