Joves i ciència

Joves i ciència és un programa de la Fundació Catalunya - la Pedrera que té per objectiu fomentar les vocacions científiques dels joves. S’adreça a cinquanta estudiants de 4t d’ESO que, fins a l’entrada a la universitat, tindran l’oportunitat de viure la recerca científica en primera persona durant tres anys.

PERFIL DELS CANDIDATS

• Alumnat de 4t d’ESO.
• Bon expedient acadèmic, que ha d’anar acompanyat de ganes i il·lusió per participar en el programa. Busquem joves que, a més de tenir bons resultats acadèmics, tinguin molt interès per la investigació científica, amb talent i curiositat per les ciències.
• Bon nivell d’anglès. • Intenció de cursar el Batxillerat Científic i/o Tecnològic.
• Compromís per aprofitar les oportunitats que ofereix el Programa Joves i Ciència durant els seus tres anys de durada. 
• Estudiar en un centre de secundària de Catalunya, ja sigui públic, privat o concertat. 

PROCÈS DE SELECCIÓ

Per a la selecció es valorarà:

• Respostes a les preguntes dels formularis d’inscripció del candidat/a. 
• Carta de motivació. 
• Recomanacions del centre. En són necessàries dues: una d’un membre de l’equip docent de l’àrea de ciència, matemàtiques o tecnologia, i l’altra del tutor/a, cap d’estudis o director/a. 
• El nivell d’anglès. 
• Expedient acadèmic. 
• Entrevista personal, en cas de superar la primera fase de la selecció

Joves i Ciència

Isabel Lammers (see previous post) had also been selected for the prestigious and select program “JOVES I CIÈNCIA” which runs over three years. Her first installment occurred at the start of July over two weeks and this is Isabel telling us what happened and what she did in order to be selected:

The Experience:

Going to Joves i Ciencia has been one of the most incredible experiences in my life. I chose the project on DNA, evolution and biodiversity. This first year we got to work in a laboratory in the Pyrennees using modern techniques like PCR and agarose gel electrophoresis. We also had lessons taught by some brilliant researchers from the CRG (Centre de Regulació Genòmica). We learned how to track genetic diseases, extract and sequence DNA, check for genetically modified food and lots more including how to use cool lab equipment. But it wasn’t all work; we had lots of fun too! We played games at night, went on an excursion, made great friends, explored species of the Pyrenees, watched an exciting film and even had a hilarious scientific comedy show organised for us.

The Selection:

Since there is a long selection process and a low acceptance rate, I never thought I stood much of a chance of getting in. The first part is written and I had to write about my interests, the reason I wanted to go and answer a long question. Later on I got told I had passed onto the second selection process where in an interview lasting half an hour I had to talk about myself, answer some questions and carry out a simple experiment. I thought it went terribly but after an agonizingly long time I was told I’d been accepted. So I highly recommend anyone interested in science to give it a go!

Què faig aquest estiu?

Cada estiu s'organitzen activitats d'estiu de tota mena, algunes relacionades amb la ciència. Aquí van dues:

• El Campus d'estiu "Imagina el teu futur", organitzat per l'IQS a finals de juny, adreçat a alumnes de 3r d'ESO interessats en enginyeria i en format de tallers. La data límit d'inscripció és el 8 de juny.
• Un altre són els campus científics d'estiu organitzats pel Ministerio de Educación, Cultura y Deportes i la Fundación Española para la Ciencia y la Tecnología, FECYT, amb la col·laboració de l'Obra Social "la Caixa", dirigits a estudiants de 4t d'ESO i 1r de batxillerat interessats en diferents camps de la ciència: matemàtiques, evolució, biologia, física, disseny per ordinador, ... Aquests campus tenen una durada d'una setmana al juliol.
