Science Fair 2015.....the time is drawing near!!!
Science Fair
Year 7 & 2nd ESO
After months of working on their various scientific
projects, the students of year 7 and 2nd ESO are putting in the finishing
touches.
These students will present their projects to both
parents and other students on Thursday April 23rd from 15:30 to
16:30 and Friday April 24th from 09:00 to 12:30.
These projects will be judged by members of the
Science department and students from 1st bach and IB1 and prizes
will be awarded for first and second place in both year groups. Honorary
mentions will also be awarded for those students with exceptional projects.
The purpose of this Science Fair is to:

Give the students an appreciation of
Science through the process of research.
·
Give the students the ability to
think critically about what they are learning.
·
Create autonomy within the students.
·
Prepare them for the rigours of
Bachillerato treball de recerca, IB internal assessments and IB extended essay.
These projects will also be marked by their hard working
teacher, Christian Moore, and will contribute to their third term final grade.
Please come to support these students on either of the
days and see what cool things they have been getting up to.

Planetes nans
La investigació planetària està vivint un dels seus moments més interessants: estem identificant i estudiant planetes exteriors al nostre Sistema Solar, exoplanetes, s'ha situat una sonda sobre un cometa , tenim mostres de la cua d'un cometa i dues sondes més aproximant-se als grans oblidats del nostre Sistema Solar, els planetes nans.
Una d'elles, New Horizons, està aproximant-se a Plutó, i a juliol d'aquest any hi passarà molt a prop. L'altra, la missió Dawn, està més a prop, al cinturó d'asteroides i dirigint-se al seu objecte més gran, Ceres - el qual començarà a orbitar aquest 6 de març - després d'haver visitat Vesta, un altre objecte d'aquest cinturó fa uns anys.

TOTS HO HEM FET ALGUN COP
Tots ho hem fet algun cop: tirem d’un dels nostres dits i
sentim un petit cruixit. A què es deu
aquest intrigant soroll?
Com estudis dels anys 70 ja suposaven, aquest soroll obeeix a
la formació de bombolles en les articulacions. Però, com es formen aquestes bombolles?
Primer de tot hem de comprendre la morfologia de les
articulacions:
Per facilitar el
moviment entre el ossos, el contacte entre dos d’ells és assegurat per diversos
intermediaris. Els extrems estan protegits per un cartílag, un material
capacitat per resistir la compressió i la tracció.
Per altra banda, la
lubricació entre tots dos, és proporcionada per líquid sinovial en una fina capa. Aquesta serveix per reduir el
fregament entre cartílags.
Quan tirem dels ossos, es provoca la disminució de la pressió en el líquid i
per tant es creen les bombolles responsables del cruixits.
Pot ser perillós?
De fet, tot i que no està assegurat, es
creu que cruixir-se els dits pot arribar a provocar artritis, inestabilitat en
l’articulació i pèrdua de la força i la funció de la mà. No obstant, això
encara no ha estat demostrat ja que diferents estudis es porten a fi amb resultats
i conclusions que donen a entendre diverses possibles respostes.

Science fair project – it’s time to experiment
The students of 2nd ESO and Year 7 have begun
experimenting on their chosen projects. So far we have students who have
started their tests to find out:
- · Which drinks stain our teeth the most?
- · Does the temperature of a lemon affect how much electricity it can produce?
- · Does the acidity of orange juice change depending on how we store it?
- · Is the “5 second rule” (when we drop food on the floor) a myth?
- · Where are there more germs in our school?
What do you think the answers will be?
Today two of our 2nd ESO students were working
their microbiology skills to take samples of bacteria and grow them on agar
using aseptic techniques:
